Mattel 'Tuff Stuff' Toys

These Tuff Stuff toys, made by Mattel, were released in the early 70s. The mixer worked by pulling a string and pushing the top yellow button to make the mixing blades rotate. The sewing machine also worked by simply pulling a string. Upon release, the foot would quickly move up and down to emulate the sewing.

The shopping cart was perfect for fitting a dolly in the front and for placing the Tuff Stuff food in the basket. My sister and I loved to play store when we were little!

  1. Thanks for your picture. I still have my cart that my daughter plays with now. I knew I was missing a piece of food, but couldn't remember which one. Thanks to your picture - I'm missing the apple! My food colors are all different too.

  5. I would like to purchase this shopping cart for my granddaughter as her mommy loved hers and it was smashed in our recent move. I am not a good Ebay bidder and that is why I am looking for a straight purchase. Can you advise?

  9. These were so much more durable than today's toy shopping carts. I would tie a string to the front of it and haul it around like a wagon, and it would carry everything in it! We made it look like a pioneer covered wagon at one point. I remember I used to have adventures going over the Interstate bridge taking my important items (like.... La Mutt) then running home pulling it behind me. Ah, the memories.

  10. I had one of those shopping carts and I walked it everywhere. I'm sorry now that I gave it away, even though I don't have any kids to whom to pass it on.

  11. That surely reminds me of my childhood toys. Lovely, colorful stuffs. It's funny to remember those times when the only thing that matters is out toys alone.

  14. Did Mattel just stop making the Tuff Stuff line totally? I, too, am looking for a shopping cart. Does anyone know why they don't make them anymore? Perhaps one of the lawn recycled plastic outdoor furniture companies should look at this marketing opportunity.
